MY GODSON, KEIFFY

My godson, Keiffy, or Ryan Keith Jr is 4 years old. He's the son of my friend, Krys, who I've been friends with since 1998.

Anyway, Jen and I (you remember Jen from a previous post, right?) went to Sacramento to visit Krys and Keiffy in their newly bought house. Keiffy was a bit sick, with cough and colds and was more quiet than usual.

Keiffy's a really sweet kid. He would kiss and hug you as soon as he sees you, and whenever you would ask him too. My cousins hate doing that. They would complain to me whenever I'd ask for a kiss or a hug, "But we've already done that!"

Keiffy would also automatically say, "I love you, too," when you tell him that you love him. My grandmother who saw him on my mother's 50th birthday told him, "I love you." And he responded automatically with "I love you, too." And my grandmother could never get enough of him ever since. Mind you, that was the first time Keiffy saw my grandmother. Hehe.

Keiffy's real smart, too. His mom, Krys, is a nurse, who works nigh shifts, so he finds her sleeping during the day. He apparently told his mom, "why don't you just quit working so you can spend more time awake and spend more time with me?" This came from a 4 year old, just to remind you.

And just recently, while we were eating dinner at their house, Krys asked me to ask Keiffy 3 + 4. I was astounded. "He knows how to add," I asked. Keiffy's not even going to school yet! But anyway, I asked. And then, Keiffy held up his right arm with four fingers up and his left arm with three fingers up. He then counted each finger that was up and said, "seven!" Jen and I were surprised.

Naturally, we asked Krys how she taught him that. She said that she didn't teach him. He just knew. Keiffy has an older sister, Audrey, who's learning how to add, so maybe he picked it up from her. But still! Just by watching his sister add, he learned how to add himself!

Jen said, "Once I'm pregnant, I would always listen to classical music even though I hate listening to that stuff." See, Krys was always listening to classical music when she was pregnant with Keiffy. It apparently helps with the child's brain development.

Then I said, "so he can do only up to 5 + 5. 'coz that's all the finger he has on each hand." Krys asked me to try asking him anyway. So I asked him 7 + 1. He put up his hands, looked at me and said, "I can't do that!" Hehe.

I miss that boy already!

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JONATHAN BRANDIS?

I thought of the movie, NeverEnding Story, earlier this morning. So, I thought of Jason Richter (of Free Willy) who played the lead in one of those movies, and Jonathan Brandis. And I remembered Carminda, a high school classmate and friend, who had such a devotion to Jonathan Brandis. I'm not sure if Harbie or Jane or Erlyn read her "Sweet Dreams" like novels with Jonathan as the lead character, but I know Malou and I did. (hehe ... dawit si Malou). Anyway, so I thought to myself, "whatever happened to him?" And I vowed that I will look him up to know what he's been up to.

To my surprise, I found out that he died. I don't know if any of you knew this, but I certainly didn't. And he died tragically (I thought through an accident) by taking his own life. I was shocked. I was saddened. I wonder how Carminda reacted to that news. I know she probably doesn't care about Jonathan Brandis anymore. But still, he was part of her past. Hmm ...

A YEAR OF GOODBYES

I've been in this lab for too long. I've seen, two years ago, 6 people leave from our lab - Angela, Mhairi, Christine, Victoria, Allan, and Tina. This year 4 people are leaving fom our lab - Sherri, the post-doc I've been working with for the past (almost) 4 years; Jean, the Chinese post-doc who makes me laugh, Michael, a graduate student; and Sachiko, our MD PhD from Japan.

I found out at lunch today that 6 other people from neighboring labs on our floor are leaving as well. 3 of them are going back to their home countries - Craig from the Ganem lab is going back to Canada. Anne Laure, also from the Ganem lab is going back to France. Alex from the Bishop lab is going back to Australia. The other 3 are relocating. Brit's going to Berkeley. Alana's going to either Denver or Salt Lake City. And Sue's going to Arizona.

These are the people who surrounded me all throughout my (almost) 4 years in this lab. I'm sure by the end of this year, I would have shed a lot of tears. Things won't be the same in the lab anymore. :'-(

Aside from saying goodbye to all these wonderful people, this year, I'm saying goodbye to my dreams of becoming an MD. After 4 years of pondering and reflecting, I've realized that being an MD is not for me. I've always wanted to be Dr. Venus Catherine Manalo, MD. Maybe I'll still be a Dr. Venus Catherine Manalo, but the "suffix" will be different. ;-) HMM ...

MY LIFE'S SHARING - AN INVITATION

This is the invitation that was sent out.

Please join us again in the BCBP Breakfast Fellowship, and listen to God's message through our sharer.

       Life sharing of Kate Manalo
      Date: April 22, 2006 (Saturday)
       Time: 8:30 am (Registration starts)
Place: Fresh Pizza & BBQ, 15829 Channel Street, San Lorenzo, CA 94580

O di ba? Life sharing daw. And when they say LIFE, they mean from the time you were born to the present time. And you're given 40 minutes to do everything. Being that I'm verbose, how do you suppose I can make use of the limited time given to me and manage to finish in 40 minutes? Hehe, that's my challenge.

If I do end up in the "society" section of the Manila Mail, I'll put up a scan of that newspaper. After all, Kuya Junby, who made his life sharing last February was featured in that newspaper. Maybe, I'll be featured, too! Haha! Wishful thinking ako masyado.

If you're wondering how I'll end up in Manila Mail, a member of BCBP submits articles for Manila Mail, including photos and brief descriptions of BCBP activities.

So, can I expect Harbie, Jane and Malou to show up? :-P

A COUPLE OF THINGS

I ran out on my creative juices. I can't think of a clever title for this post. It's way past my bedtime (*blush), but I just have to type these thoughts out or else I won't be able to sleep soundly tonight.

Btw, these are not important stuff. I just want to put them out there 'coz I've bottled up thoughts and emotions for the past month due to Lent. I'd end up closer to becoming a schizo if I don't let these thoughts out.

1) I was asked to write a reflection for "In His Steps," a Catholic reflection thingy (can you tell my brain no longer works ... I can't think of a better term for "thingy") last year. I distinctly remember making a reflection for the April 2nd, 2006 gospel reading. I don't subscribe to In His Steps, so I had no idea if the piece I submitted was published. I just heard from someone who has In His Steps that it was. And I recently heard from another person that it was published for the Easter Sunday reflection. And I was touched! I guess Easter Sunday holds such a significant meaning in my life, so I'm really happy it was published for that particular day. Ang galing ni Lord!

2) I just did a test on Tickle.com - Who's Your Movie Star Double. I thought the answer was pretty interesting. It's Cate Blanchett!!! A Brit (I'm an anglophile according to Allan). And we have the same name (her's is spelled differently). :-)

3) After 2 years of being so busy with her school work in Stockton (which is about an hour away from where I live), my very good friend, Jen, is finally done!!! Congratulations Jen! After her finals, she packed her things and drove back to San Francisco! She's finally back home. And though I know she's pretty tired, she agreed to meet with me. We had dinner at Pasta Pomodoro, then hung out at Starbucks 'coz we have a lot of catching up to do. It was great seeing her again! :-D

LIGHT DAY AT WORK

I'm grateful for these days, when it seems like I have nothing to do at work. :-) I was bored at first, then I remembered, Lent is over and I can read blogs na. Malou didn't have as much posts as Harbie and Jane, so I started off with her blog and finished quickly. Then I finished Jane's. And just now, I finished reading Harbie's. :-) I tried commenting on each post, but since I haven't been blogging recently, words don't flow freely from my thoughts to the screen. :-P

*pats myself on the back for accomplishing what I thought would be impossible for me to do - get through all of Harbie's, Malou's and Jane's posts all throughout the Lenten Season.

That's all folks!

TRUSTING IN A POWERFUL GOD, WHOM I DON'T UNDERSTAND

*Before you read this post, I just have to say that I missed blogging. But more than that, I missed reading your blogs. I know I have a lot of posts to read through for all of you, in order to catch up with what's happening with you guys. I truly missed y'all.*

A couple of years ago, I went through a very difficult struggle. It was beset with grief, pain, suffering, and many sleepless, crying nights. But through it all, I learned a valuable and beautiful lesson. It was such a precious experience for me that I did not hesitate to say, "If given a chance to go through it all again, exactly as it happened before, I would."

Who would have thought that that "prayer" would be answered? Certainly not I. For even though I meant what I said, that I would go through it all again, I said it believing that it's not going to happen. But it did happen.

I can't tell you in detail all that happened before and all that is happening now. But let me just tell you, it's frighteningly familiar. Most of the things that happened in that fateful year are happening in the exact same way this year. I'm truly living a day-to-day (okay, I'm exaggerating. maybe it's week-to-week) deja vu experience. It's surreal. It's almost funny.

And (I know this is not my religious, reflective blog, but one or two of you know what I'm talking about, so I'm putting this up here) I am so awed by the power of God. I cannot attribute this to anyone or anything but Him. I wish I can tell you all the weird things that happened then and are happening now. But, for reasons I cannot disclose, I can't. :-(

I feel like I starred in a soap opera for a year and now I'm starring in the same soap opera, with the same story line. It's not like I'm watching re-runs of the soap. But it's like I'm filming it all over again. Even though it's been filmed before! (I know this doesn't make sense but I hope you get the gist).

I don't understand why it's happening again or why it had to happen again. Why, of all my prayers, this is the one He chose to answer? I mean, He could have ignored that petition of mine, right? It wasn't like I asked Him, "Let me go through it all again." I just said "IF GIVEN A CHANCE." But one thing's for sure, I see how powerful He is. He truly can disturb the order of the world, just for His will to be done. I mean, these are not random events. These are specific events, involving several people, that are happening again!

Sigh! I don't understand God. I know I never will. He, Himself, said, "As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts." (Is 55:9)

All I can do right now is trust that there's a reason and a purpose for all that's happening right now. I won't know what that reason and purpose is, until the time He chooses to reveal that to me.

One thing's for sure though, despite the fact that everything's happening exactly the same way it did before, my reactions to the situations I'm faced with are different. I haven't experienced grief, pain, suffering, and many sleepless, crying nights. Hopefully, the outcome of this "repeat performance" will be different than the one before. But even if it did end up having the same outcome, at least I know that God is powerful enough to humor me by allowing me to go through again something that I said I would, if given a chance. :-)

That's all folks!

HAPPY EASTER!!!

Just want to say, after my more than 40 days hiatus ...

HAPPY EASTER !!!
